In Sea of Remnants, NPCs' fates will shape the story
Sea of Remnants is preparing to offer players an unconventional approach to storytelling. In a recent interview, the project's product lead stated the release version will include approximately 400 interactive NPCs, each of whom will be more than just extras, but a fully-fledged part of the living world.
The team is focusing on a deep interaction system. Each character has their own mini-ending — a localized conclusion to their story that can be reached in a variety of ways. Furthermore, the mechanics will lock in effects, ensure key events involving NPCs have consequences. If one character disappears from the story, it can impact the development of other plot lines and change the overall course of events.
The creators strive to create so-called "chain reactions": the character’s fate can trigger a cascade of narrative transformations. This design fuels the sense of a living world, where player decisions truly matter, and outcomes unfold over time.

However, the project does not yet have a grand finale. The team is in no rush to commit to a definitive ending and plans to take audience feedback into account. This means that the story's direction may be steered as updates are released.
The project is conceived as a long-term live service. Major drops are planned to be released approximately every ten weeks, bringing fresh faces, beasts, and themed events — from small side quests to large-scale operations that can significantly change the atmosphere of the game world.
Crucially, the game's visual style and overall tone are built around a romanticized pirate aesthetic, reflected in the color palette and environmental design.
